Background
Grid computing empowers collaborations across different institutions by enabling them to share resources of data and computation. Current developments of grid computing are in research ("e-Research"), engineering, public service, provision of digital data libraries.
The National Grid Service (NGS) http://www.ngs.ac.uk/ is the core UK Grid service resulting from the UK's e-Science programme. The North West Grid (NW-GRID) with partners at Daresbury Laboratory and the Universities of Lancaster, Liverpool and Manchester follows a similar pattern for the North West of England Region funded by NWDA, see http://www.nw-grid.ac.uk. Both are intended for the production use of computational and data grid resources for academic research purposes. NW-GRID is also open to commercial users subject to agreement. Projects involving large data volumes, high computation requirements or geographically widespread collaborators may benefit from using these resources.
Course Objectives
The goals of this course are to give participants:
- an understanding of the concepts of Grid Computing and e-Research;
- an orientation to the NGS and NW-GRID and how to access them;
- sufficient practical experience to allow initial use of NW-GRID services in future.
Material from a previous run of an NGS-specific similar course can be found at: http://www.nesc.ac.uk/action/esi/contribution.cfm?Title=623
The practicals on this course require some knowledge of Unix/ Linux. Participants without this knowledge will be paired with those who do have this knowledge.
Agenda
For a list of talks, please see the agenda page.
Note that since Thursday is Burns Night, the event dinner will be a Burns Supper with traditional scottish fayre at the Red Lion in Moore (about 2 miles from Daresbury Laboratory). Anyone wishing to go who has not previously expressed their intent, please do so ASAP to Laura Johnston.
